Life's working experience.

After finishing school, at the age of 16 and with a clear cut interest in IT and graphic designing, an opportunity presented itself. My first ever job! I was employed by an off shore company in Limassol to design and produce their product catalogs, which were then printed and distributed to various partners in China, Egypt and the UK.

Three years on and with an even keener sense of my skills and the yearning to broaden my interests in the graphic designing business, I applied and was accepted to work at a well established prepress studio in Limassol. My duties were to sit by seasoned designers and assist them with whatever they needed. After a while, my knowledge in the world of desktop publishing slowly gave me opportunities to work on small to medium sized projects.

As part and parcel of any office ‘newbie’, I was privileged enough to have hands on experience throughout the department to fully understand what it takes, to get from a simple sketch layout to a freshly printed product. From conceptual design techniques, design implementation and finally the production of full color separations, of which to anyone remotely interested is a fascinating process, even if you’re stumbling around in the dark-room. Yes, they also jam like a regular printer does sometimes!

Through my years there, I also became familiar with image montages, photo manipulating and various other enhancement techniques. Towards the end of my 3 years at the prepress studio, I was head hunted by a local photographic company to work with a well known hotel photographer. This would open up new doors for me and a new experience.

I spent the next 6 years, working alongside a genius photographer, who more or less took me under his wing, and taught me all there was to know about photography. My main duties were to scan professional color slides, carry out final cropping, cleaning and archiving ready for the client to be used in publications and other media. For the likes of The Amathus Hotel Group, Grecian Hotels, Atlantica Hotels, Aphrodite Hills in Paphos and Columbia Hotels & Resorts.

And finally in between all of my jobs and in my spare time, I became interested in Web Design & Development, obviously not something that can be picked up over night. Starting at the bottom from basic HTML coding and tables, up through the years, CSS styling which is great if you don’t want to deal with the restrictions of using tables in your design layouts. And up until a couple of years ago, I came across CMS (Content Management System) software. This forced me to learn other languages such as Java Script and PHP and the realm of MySQL databases.

A special thank you goes out to a close friend of mine, to whom, without his scrutinizing creative criticisms and support, has taught me a lot about web development, esthetics and practicality. I've now settled down and continue to produce websites, using and implementing the skills I've learned over the past 15 years. I'm Patrick Walker and this has been my life's working experience, thus far!

Recaptured Memories?

I have my partner, Nicky, to thank for this name. About 4 years ago, I was trying to promote my Photo Restoration service and I needed a name for it. Recaptured Memories was one of them, it seemed to suit what I was doing at the time. And now it's stuck and folks around here know me as, "ah you're the 'Recaptured Memoirs' guy!" – lol bless ‘em.
